Welcome

"To change the world you need to understand it, to understand it you need to know Economics.”

Economics is current; it is about real world issues that matter. Students studying Economics at CGS are actively encouraged to develop a passion for reading around the subject and to enquire why decisions are made.

- Mr Stephan, Head of Business and Economics

What We Do

GCSE Business provides an interesting insight into the role of businesses within society. This specification focuses on the growth profile of businesses, with the first half of the course examining business start-ups and the second half of the course considering business growth. The relationship between business enterprise and other factors such as finance, marketing and human resources are investigated. As the course evolves you will become increasingly aware how relevant the theory is to real-life activity.

All of us are affected by the activities of business organisations and this course provides an opportunity to prepare for the wider-world beyond Colyton Grammar School. The GCSE course will encourage you to consider how to succeed in a very competitive world and how to find a market niche and create a profitable and successful enterprise.

The course will also provide an opportunity to consider what makes a business successful and you will have several opportunities to put your understanding into practice through competitions such as the Coca-Cola Challenge (where you will have to design and market a new type of soft drink) and Tycoon in Schools (where you have to write a business plan to secure funding from Peter Jones of Dragon’s Den to start your own small company. There will also be ‘snap’ competitions such as ‘Tenner’ where you and your team have to turn £10 into as much money as possible to demonstrate you and your team’s entrepreneurial skill.
