News - Nov 30

Under the leadership of Mrs Bacon, Colyton Grammar School’s newly-appointed Chess Coach, the team travelled to the Devon qualification tournament held at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School. We entered with two teams and our Team A came equal first with Millfield School on Total Points for rounds score (6 out of 6). Although Millfield had a higher aggregated individual score (i.e. they won more individual games), it is still a remarkable triumph for our six players, given that many other teams seemed to mostly consist of sixth formers, whereas our players were all in Year 10 or below. (We have some very strong players in Year 11, but they are currently sitting their GCSE mocks.) The team managed to beat some stiff competition – here is the results table:

CGS Team A - 6 points; Millfield School - 6 points; Devonport High - 4 points;

Exeter School Team A - 4 points; Exeter Maths School A - 4 points; TBGS Team C - 3 points;

TBGS Team B - 2 points; Stover Team A - 2 points; Exeter School Team B - 2 points;

CGS Team B - 1 point; Exeter Maths School B - 1 point; Stover Team B - 1 point

Also, well done to Team B, who didn't score so highly, but nevertheless demonstrated some remarkable chess skills, great team spirit and a superb attitude.

Team A has now progressed to the next level - so watch this space! A big thank-you to Mr Braithwaite, Physics teacher and bus driver, without whom we wouldn’t have been able to attend.
