Mandarin students at Colyton have been busy celebrating the Chinese Spring Festival  as we welcomed the Year of the Rabbit. This year, the first day of the Spring Festival fell on 21st January and in China the celebration usually lasts for a whole two weeks.

At lunch time, our Years 8, 9 and 10 students organised a Chinese New Year Market in Cottrill Hall and sold a variety of goodies that originated from China, ranging from Chinese sweets, candied fruit sticks to dumplings and bubble tea. It was received well by our student customers and the stalls were sold out within half an hour! A big thank you to the stall owners for preparing for the market so well and for bringing a taste of China to our school.

Our celebration then continued into the evening, when our two Chinese Gods of Fortune, dressed up by Elliot and Danil from Year 10, welcomed the parents of the Mandarin students of Year 7 to Year 10 at the door. Our students prepared a dragon dance for the audience and each year group sang a Chinese song. Throughout the evening our guests participated in various activities run by the students, including practising calligraphy, making 3-D pandas and Chinese knots. Parents especially enjoyed playing shuttlecocks, a form of Chinese sports, and got quite competitive. As food plays an important part in Chinese celebrations, we ended our evening with a tasty Chinese meal that made lots of people come back for more! It was an evening packed with laughter, joy and happiness.
