Recently, the school hosted the annual South West Academic Trust Challenge Cup where a team of students from Colyton Grammar School competed against schools in Plymouth, Torbay, Poole and Bournemouth.

The focus of this year’s competition was how to improve sustainability in schools with students having to base their ideas on what was achievable on a £300 budget. This limit was imposed to make it more likely that schools could realistically adopt these ideas. The Colyton team, which consisted of Zach S (Y12), Isabel V (Y10) and Mark R (Y9) presented a compelling case for the need for schools to reduce their food waste. Schools in England throw away 80,000 tonnes a food a year.

Although they didn’t win this year, our team provided a brilliant example of Colyton students working together to identify creative solutions to problems and presenting their ideas to an audience of strangers with confidence and articulacy. The judging panel, which included the Chief of Staff for the Office for Environmental Protection, was highly complementary about all the presentations and it was an inspiring event overall. Well done to the students involved.
