Year 8 students have continued to build, test and refine their parachutes and rockets as part of Science Week. They were tasked with designing and building rockets that could be launched 30 metres in the air and then deploy a parachute to safely deliver a package of aid back to the ground. During the development stages, most students managed to build a parachute to deliver an egg to the ground target accurately, without cracking, from the top of the Walker Building, but the deployment of the parachute from a rocket posed more problems. A total of six teams managed this. The biggest obstacle proved to be weight distribution on the rocket so that it fired upwards without veering off at an angle.

In between these lessons, students have also been designing electrical circuits to communicate Morse codes. The added challenge was to scramble and encrypt the messages so they couldn’t be intercepted.

A big thank you to the science technicians for their work supporting these activities.
