UKMT TEAM CHALLENGE FINAL
Congratulations to Ben G and Liam T, both in year 9, and Robin H and Anna M, both in year 8 for their superb efforts in this year’s UKMT Team Challenge Final held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London on 18th June. Not only did they improve on Colyton Grammar School’s 30th place finish last year by finishing 25th, they also finished as the top team from the South West region.
The UKMT Team Challenges promote mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills. They also give young people the opportunity to compete against students from other schools in their region.
1,742 teams originally entered the annual competition and the team qualified by winning their regional event in March, to be one of 88 teams in the national final.
After a ridiculously early start the team arrived at Waterloo and, after a leisurely stroll through London, took their seats in Lindley Hall which was still hot, although thankfully, not quite the furnace temperatures of the previous year!
The first round involved creating a poster to showcase the mathematics of Euler and the team created an excellent poster which had as a back drop the Seven Bridges of Königsberg problem, complete with 3D bridges expertly made by Ben. There then followed four more rounds of challenging mathematics which the team tackled as a four or in pairs during the day.
All four students performed admirably on the day, working very well as a team and were a credit to Colyton Grammar School.
