The school library offers a variety of resources and activities. Our print collection consists of over 7500 titles,
including modern fiction, classic novels, subject materials, and a careers library. We subscribe to a wide range of specialist journals and magazines, including GCSE and A Level Reviews, the New Scientist and History Today. Our digital subscriptions include JSTOR, which is a digital library of articles, books, and primary sources, and a growing collection of ebooks and specialist material to support all areas of learning. You will find all the details through the library’s online catalogue, which is also available as an app.

The library has a flexible environment that supports silent study, quiet and comfortable reading, and class activities and lunchtime events. We provide support and guidance on research and referencing skills for sixth form and EPQ students, and digital and information literacy skills for junior students. The library hosts several clubs including a student librarian group and a Carnegie Medal shadowing club. We run regular competitions and events including the Harry Potter Book Night, World Book Day, book fairs and literary quizzes. Our SharePoint page provides full details of all library news, subscriptions, activities, reading recommendations and topic resources. Library - Home (sharepoint.com)

Reading Lists

‘Reading for pleasure was found to be more important for children’s cognitive development between ages 10 and 16 than their parents' level of education. The combined effect on children's progress of reading books often, going to the library regularly and reading newspapers at 16 was four times greater than the advantage children gained from having a parent with a degree.’

(Centre for Longitudinal Studies, 2013)

Colyton Grammar School is committed to developing a love of reading for pleasure in its students. To help students find books that will excite and inspire, the school has put together two core reading lists:

The Blockbuster Reading Challenge

Aimed at Years 7 and 8, and drawing inspiration from the famous quiz show, the challenge is made up of four separate lists: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. To complete each challenge and earn a certificate, students need to ‘cross the board’ by reading five books from the list. Prizes are on offer for students who complete all four challenges, or read all twenty-five book on a single list.

 â€‹50 Unforgettable Reads

50 Unforgettable Reads is aimed at Years 9 to 13. The list is contains the books most frequently recommended by both staff and students as the most inspiring and enjoyable books they had read. The titles, fiction and non-fiction, span a huge range of subjects and genres. Each term a book from the list will be chosen as ‘Book of the Term’.
