Recently, we welcomed award-winning Equity Diversity and Inclusion consultant Maia Thomas to Colyton Grammar School to deliver an assembly to the lower school in which she talked about her journey from London to Devon and the challenges that she faced as a young black woman growing up. In her talk, she showcased all that she has done to support the local community with her EDI research and her Feed our Community charity.
During her visit, Maia held workshops with students throughout the school on a variety of themes relating to race, plus hers and other locals’ stories of the BLM movement and ally-ship. These themes opened up a discussion about how better we can support each other in our ongoing mission to be a more inclusive school. Maia had planned her visit for back in February, during Black History Month in the USA (this is in October in the UK), but due to illness, her talk was postponed until more recently.
In addition to Maia’s visit the school will continue to work with Diverse Educators, specialists in the area who have already reviewed the work and practice of the Teaching School Hub.
We, as a school, would like to thank Miss Tucker and Mr Braithwaite for their fantastic ongoing work in this very important area of school development.
