At the start of March, three teams from Colyton Grammar School took part in the VEX Robotics UK Nationals in Telford. Two teams from Year 12 competed in the VRC category with a team from Year 9 entering the IQ category.

The Vex Robotics Competition is an international robotics competition that requires students to work in teams to design, build and program robots to compete in a game. This year’s competition revolved around throwing discs into goals for the VRC category and releasing disks and launching them along the ground for the IQ category.

The teams earned their places in the finals after becoming tournament champions in the regional events which were held here at Colyton in January.

In the VRC tournament, our team 622A which consists of Connor W, William R, Daniel B, Charles J and Peter M, ended the qualifying rounds in ninth place in their division, an amazing achievement. Phillip B, Benedict O, Sam L and Ameera P of our 622B team had some tough opponents and weak alliance partners but played some great games, narrowly losing to the one of the best teams in their final qualifier.

In the IQ Tournament, Naomi J, Abigail H, Maria G, Charlotte P and Rowan S made a big impression on their judges with their approach to problem solving when designing their robot, being awarded the judges’ award for their efforts. They also recorded the 10h best programming skills score at the UK Nationals.

Well done to all involved, and a big thank you to Mr M Cronk, Mrs J Bennattar, Mr A Stephan and Mrs N Jokonya who gave up their weekend to support the students.
