Recently, 10 Year 8 students from Colyton Grammar School travelled to the Exeter College Technology Centre to take part in the annual Lego Robotics competition.

Led by Mrs Benattar, the students competed in a number of different events with the two Lego robots they had designed and constructed, competing against other local schools such as Kings, Ottery, Fairfield School, Humphrey Davy School, St Peters School, Gillingham School, Wadebridge School and Torquay School. The events, designed by the team as Raising Robots, challenged the students to programme their robots to complete a variety of tasks.

First up was the speed challenge, which saw our team test out just how fast their robot could go with points given for speed and penalties given if the robot failed to reach the white box at the end of the four metre distance or crashed through the Lego brick wall. We then took part in the teamwork challenge, where the team were tasked to construct a tower of Duplo bricks without locking them together, whilst, at times, being unable to communicate and with one hand behind their backs.

The mat challenge saw the team having to programme their second robot to complete a number of environmentally themed tasks in an area management scenario. Tasks included collecting a battery pack and returning to the robot’s base and collecting discarded items in a clean up exercise. The team also had to give a presentation on the design on their robots, their construction process and how the team has overcome challenges.

After a day of hard work, teamwork, fun and laughter, the Colyton Grammar School teams both came away as joint winners in the display presentation round and full of excitement after a great day.

Well done to Liv W, Emily P, Oskabah L-K, Ryan D, Toby K, Adam S, Daniel S, Eliza T, Georgia M and Jasmyn K-M for taking part and a big thank you to Mrs Benattar for her hard work and guidance.
