As a CyberFirst School, a number of companies held lessons with our Year 8 students this week, focussing on a number of activities that broaden their ideas of careers in cyber.

GCHQ ran a class on classic codebreaking, with South West Regional Organised Crime Unit focussed on cracking a cyber safe. Bournemouth University introduced students to a new cybersecurity game entitled CyGamBit and Cognition Learning used a Lego safe to explore digital security. Finally, CACI used digital simulation to teach students about space weather, gravity and planets.

When asked what they had learnt throughout the day, Year 8 students responded:

‘That a cyber career doesn’t just involve computers!’

‘How to protect yourself online’

‘That there are lots of different types of code (eg. Morse code)’

‘How Lego Robotics work and how you make a programme more secure’

‘That when encrypting a message, it would go through more than one code i.e a message would go through a caesur cipher and then morse code’

A student also commented that ‘everyone made an effort that made it more exciting’ and we would like to thank everyone to worked hard to make the day.

On the day, CyberFirst took the opportunity to congratulate the 36 girls who recently took part in the CyberFirst Girls Challenge.
