Numatic, the creators of Henry Vacuums, invited us (three Year 12s: Evelyn D, Rose B and Alice K), along with students from two other schools, to their factory in Chard for International Women in Engineering Day. In the company of the wonderful Miss Carter, we arrived at around 9.30 and were taken to the showroom which had a variety of new cleaning equipment on display. We were introduced to Jane Beith, the supply chain manager, who gave a presentation on her career and the structure of the company.

Following this, we were equipped with headsets and toured around the factory and got to see the making of many fabulous floor-cleaners. There was injection moulding, laser cutting, pipe bending and so much more. We even got to see the studio, where the products are photographed and advertisements are filmed. Back in the show room, we were tasked to disassemble and reassemble a scrubber dryer. It was fascinating to see all the components and how they fitted together, while also getting to meet and talk to some of the female engineers, including Zoe, who designed and built one of the newest machines in use in the factory. Overall, it was a really interesting and engaging experience and we feel so grateful to have been given this wonderful opportunity. Thank you, Numatic.
