News - Jul 9

We are delighted to announce the introduction of Period 3 ¾ for the 2024/25 academic year.

This new Period 3 ¾ will ensure that all students participate in activities, thus developing character, relationships and a sense of belonging. Furthermore, the model provides additional opportunities for student leadership, building links across the community and for a more concentrated pastoral time to encourage personal growth.

From September, the school day will be structured as below. The length of the overall school day is unchanged, so it will have no impact on transport of students’ evening activities. However, lessons start earlier, with a reduced morning registration, so it is important that students arrive punctually to school. The coach companies have been made aware of this change.

8.45 – 8.50 – Registration

8.50 – 9.50 – Period 1

9.50 – 10.05 – AM Break

10.05-11.05 – Period 2

11.05-11.10 – Movement time

11.10-12.10 – Period 3

12.10-12.35 – Period 3 ¾

12.35 – 13.25 – Lunch

13.25 – 14.25 – Period 4

14.25 – 14.35 – PM Break

14.35 – 15.35 Period 5

On Tuesdays and Thursday, Period 3 ¾ will be used for extra-curricular activities. Students will opt for their clubs at the beginning of the year, and there will be a wide range of activities for them to select. Some current music and sports clubs will slot into this period, with the opportunity to extend them into the lunch break, meaning that students will get more time for these clubs than they currently have.

Clubs will still run on the other days at lunchtime, but it is the Period 3 ¾ slot that enables us to ensure that all students are benefiting from the proven advantages of extra-curricular participation.

On the other days during Period ¾ , different year groups will be involved with assemblies, a longer tutor period, time to mentor other students and receiving interventions and mentoring, as part of our wider Character and Well-Being programme. Every student in Years 10 and 11 will also benefit from the introduction of smaller mentor groups once a fortnight in groups of eight students to help better support them.

The introduction of Period 3 ¾ will enable all Colyton students to develop a sense of purpose, belonging and resilience, as well as adding to the sense of joy that we want every student to experience at Colyton Grammar School. We pride ourselves of a rich and broad curriculum; of academic excellence with an abundance of opportunity for sport, music and the arts and the creative application of knowledge in national and global competitions. We strive to establish the foundations for living a happy, fulfilled and flourishing life.

From September 2024, the introduction of Period 3 ¾ will provide the opportunity to ensure all students are benefitting from our extra-curricular programme, as well as providing additional opportunities for academic and pastoral support.
