Recently, students from Year 12 were invited to visit South West Water, becoming involved with its Youth Board which brings the views of young adults into decision making to plan future operations in the water sector.
Students taking part could see first-hand the workings of a major local business, meet other like-minded students from around the region and earn a formal reference for use in UCAS or apprenticeship applications. The meeting involved a mix of briefings from senior executives about the company and the challenges it faces with problem solving exercises.
‘We all enjoyed our experience. I personally thought that the event was really well run, it was run by an external market research company on behalf of Southwest Water but the day consisted of various presentations by members of the Southwest Water team explaining their roles and the future policies. Our job was to go through these policies and criticise or suggest improvements for how the policies best suit future generations’

‘It was an interesting and engaging day. In essence, it was a focus group sort of thing with activities based around getting our opinions on future plans and the company whilst also educating us about what they do and what the work of SWW entails. We split into two groups to discuss with an external company and employees of SWW were there to speak to us and answer questions’

‘The day gave us an insight into the aims and potential digital projects that SWW are progressing forwards, which proved a useful demonstration of how the company will develop in the future. It was additionally very valuable and interesting to hear both proposals and opinions from other members of the youth board’
