Students attend Somerset v Hampshire Women’s cricket match

A group of excited young cricketers from Colyton Grammar School were treated to an unforgettable day out as they travelled to watch Somerset take on Hampshire in a thrilling women’s 50-over match. Sixteen girls from the club were given the special privilege of forming the guard of honour as the players entered the field – a proud and inspiring moment for all involved.  

With the sun shining brightly, Hampshire were first to bat and put in an impressive total. The batters built their innings confidently, keeping the scoreboard ticking and giving the crowd plenty to cheer about.  

The day was not only about the cricket, the hosting club had organized a range of fun events and activities for the young visitors, and the Colyton students enthusiastically got stuck in. From games and challenges to meeting players and coaches, the atmosphere was buzzing both on and off the pitch.  

In response to the strong total from Hampshire, Somerset got off to a flying start in the chase. However, hopes of a successful chase by a key early breakthrough – the wicket of former England captain Heather Knight – which sparked a collapse in the middle order. Despite the setback, Somerset fought hard and took the game deep, with the result hanging in the balance. Ultimately, they fell just short, being bowled out with six overs remaining in a tense finish that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats.  

Win or lose, it was a fantastic experience for Colyton Grammar students, who not only witnessed top-level women’s cricket but also enjoyed a day full of inspiration, fun and team spirit. The memories made today are sure fuel their love of the game for many years to come.
