The eight Year 12 students who make up our Industrial Cadets Gold team reached their denouement recently. After writing a technical report and presenting their project to an assessment panel, where they received high praise, the team travelled to Bristol for the EDT Celebration day where they displayed their project, heard about STEM careers and met young engineers from a range of companies before learning if they had been recognized for their fantastic achievements with an award.

For this project, the students were given a brief by Amsafe Bridport to reduce the weight of one of their products, the helicopter underslung cargo net. Our team have spent most of the year researching materials, testing them at both the University of Bath and Amsafe. Through this research, they saw the technical and commercial need for a tracker device to record the conditions that a net was subjected to, so they designed and fabricated a working prototype. These have all been huge achievements, well commended by Amsafe engineers and the assessment panel engineers. The students demonstrated maturity and professionalism in their weekly meetings, project management and communications. They also showcased their curiosity, resilience and resourcefulness by identifying and formulating solutions that achieved the aims of the brief from Amsafe. For these qualities, we commend Alan S, Alex S, Benjamin L, Chun C, Daniel X, Josh L, Will M and Reece T.

The team arrived early in Bristol to take part in the ‘Business Pitch’ challenge where they were grilled intensely by the assessors and gave comprehensive answers. The final verdict: incredibly tight, with over an hour of deliberation by the panel reported, but they were pipped to first place, a very impressive runner up in this category. Overall, they were up against a very strong range of projects, from other teams across the regions, so the final announcement of awards was nerve-racking, but our team came away as winners in the Teamwork category, and worthy winners too. Their management of the sub-project of the tracker device, and flexibility in managing and sharing work between them was highlighted by their assessment panel. Congratulations to them on achieving such recognition for their humility and service.
