News - Jun 27

Earlier in the year, we shared the news that teams of Sixth Form students were taking part in the MathWorks Math Modelling Challenge. This involved the teams working on a problem called ‘Hot Button Issue: Staying Cool as the World Heats Up’. They used real world data from the UK and the US to propose solutions to the devasting impact of heat waves.

Both Year 12 and Year 13 teams worked extremely hard in their allocated 14-hour window and received excellent feedback from the judges, who are all professional mathematicians. They praised both teams for the analysis of their proposed model, as well as the creativity in their approach.

We are delighted to share that our Year 13 team was successful in triage, which means that they made it through the first tough round of judging. Their submission placed them in the top 148 out of 794, which is an exceptional achievement. Congratulations to both Colyton teams, we are incredibly proud of you all.
